This production was to honor von Stade’s 25th anniversary at the Met. She is a fine Melisande, but the singing honors for me go to Dwayne Croft who was a handsomely voiced Pelleas. This production by Jonathan Miller and designs by John Conklin are not my way of seeing Pelleas, but it is the production we still live with. Generally the quality of the musicmaking is what governs the success of Pelleas, and the musicmaking is of a high order.”
