Levine is a great promoter of Harbison’s work, but I miss the appeal. First appearance of Hunt Lieberson whose only other role was Didon in the new Troyens production whose broadcast marks Hunt Lieberson’s Met farewell in February 2003 before her untimely death in July 2006.

Isepp; Vaness, Croft, Graham, Gunn, McLaughlin, Shimell
Original Air Date: 03/15/1997
SID.19480104
This is the season after the Bartoli run as Despina also with Vaness. Most of the interest in this broadcast centers on Richard Croft now in Satyagraha and Susan Graham for whom this is an early broadcast. Her second Dorabella run is in 2001 has also been on Sirius. For Vaness fans she has two Cosi broadcasts from early in her Met career 1984 and 1991, and the 1984 is particularly recommended. Her Mozart singing in the early 1980s was right up there with the very best– Steber, Fleming, Lorengar, Te Kanawa.

AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY:Picker
Conlon; Gunn, Racette, Graham, Zajick, Larmore
Original Air Date: 12/24/2005

An American Tragedy was premiered at the Met and should have been HDd during a scheduled revival in 2008 which was taken by Last Emperor (in hopes of a China tour which did not materialize). Zambello directed, and she remains faithful to the work which was revived at Glimmerglass in 2014 in a revised edition. On the radio the real standout is Zajick who makes conventional lines sound momentous, but the overall cast was well chosen.

This revival had the title role moving to baritone hands (in Massenet’s own transposition) (still too high for Domingo?), but this broadcast catches Susan Graham in one of her very best afternoons. This is the baritone version Massenet wrote for Battistini. It however catches Susan Graham in particularly splendid voice. This is a novelty for if there were ever a tenor opera it is Werther, but the composer did arrange for baritone for Battistini. Hampson is very earnest.

Summers; Diener, Groves, Graham, Gilfry, Upshaw, Pertusi
Original Air Date: 02/24/2001

I only heard portions of this broadcast, where I thought Diener was a better than average Fiordiligi, and very good work from Susan Graham, though she appears four years earlier with Vaness and Isepp conducting a more interesting supporting cast- Marie McLaughlin, Richard Croft, Nathan Gunn, and William Shimell. I do not have strong memories of this performance, though Diener has solid Mozart credentials, and this is definitely prime time for Susan Graham.
