MADAMA BUTTERFLY:Puccini

All three of ZG’s Cio-Cio Sans have been on Sirius 76 and 79 under Woitach, 81 under Fulton, though none have made it to Met Opera on Demand (MOoD). She is very solid, but we really need the Stella/Fernandi and Tucci/Bergonzi. Stella premiered the 1958 production and is probably her best broadcast representation. She deserves to be heard in this role.

Leading sopranos Hui He and Ana María Martínez share the heartbreaking title role of the doomed geisha, with tenors Piero Pretti and Andrea Carè as the American naval officer who abandons her. Paulo Szot and Markus Brück share the role of Sharpless, and Elizabeth DeShong is Suzuki, alternating with Maria Zifchak. Pier Giorgio Morandi is on the podium for Anthony Minghella’s sweeping production, a perennial audience favorite.

Good to hear Zhang on a broadcast. I thought she was very impressive in the theatre. This is a promotion from the matinee to the archival series rather quickly. The controversial part of this run of Butterfly was the conducting shared by Yves Abel and Placido Domingo. Zhang was a very high profile Butterfly both on the radio and in the theatre, so no conductor was going to get the best of her.

Dessi has focused her career primarily in Europe so she could regularly sing with her husband, Fabio Armiliato. She has only 20 Met performances covering a span of 15 years, and this is her final Met broadcast to date. Her brother-in-law is in the pit, who has 10 x the number of Met appearances. I relistened to the first act of this yesterday, and what a pleasure to two native Italians in the leads. Fabio’s absence from the Met tenor roster has been much felt in the last decade, and conductor Mario seemed much more detailed and involved than has been the norm from some of his recent Met outings. What IS missing us and MOOd are two broadcasts featuring native Italian speakers in the lead roles– Stella and Fernandi in 1958 and Tucci and Bergonzi from 1962.

Puccini
Mitropoulos; Kirsten, Fernandi, Roggero, Sereni, Kullman
Original Air Date: 04/16/1960
SID.20040103
This performance is notable for a solid cast and the presence of Mitropoulos in the pit. Kirsten lied about her age for years, actually being born in 1910 not 1917. So she is 50 for this performance, and broadcasts Butterfly as late as 1974 and does a replacement Tosca in 1979 when she is just short of her 70th birthday! She was not a terribly adventurous singer, but although nature gifted with a French lyric sound she could surmount the most challenging Puccini (Minnie, but not Turandot) and be none the worse for wear. I prefer a more robust Butterfly tonally, but she has a major career, and this is a good performance to experience her (I like her Manon Lescaut and Faust Marguerite even better). The Butterfly history is dominated by Farrar, its Met creator at 139, then Albanese at 72, and then Kirsten. It then drops to Scotto at 38. As for broadcasts, we are still missing Stella premiering the 1958 production also with Mitropoulos and the 1962 with Tucci and Bergonzi in his only broadcast Pinkerton. We hear a rotation dominated by Zylis-Gara, Scotto, Albanese and Kirsten. There are others waiting to be heard. This Butterfly turns out to be Mitropoulos’ Metropolitan farewell in NYC, with 2 Boccanegras with the Met on tour to Boston and Cleveland at the end of April. DM’s broadcasts to date unheard of in addition to the Stella Butterfly, are a Tosca with Stella, and in later seasons Milanov’s only Tosca broadcast as well as 2 Cav/ Pags from 1959 and 1960, the first being Del Monaco’s final Met performance.

Aragall only has 38 Met performances in his nine season tenure. His two broadcasts are Esclarmonde with Sutherland and this Butterfly with Scotto in close to her very best voice. Few tenor voices had such unforced beauty. His Met farewell comes in Boheme two days after this broadcast Aragall suffered from severe nervousness which could affect his pitch. Luckily his two Met broadcasts capture mostly just the remarkable voice, one much respected by his peers– Carreras, Domingo, and Pavarotti. Patane lamentably died much too young at 54 while conducting at the Bavarian State Opera, Munich. He was an excellent maestro in the Met’s Italian wing, and is the conductor for Pavarotti and Ricciarelli’s Ballo in Maschera telecast/DVD. He also is number four in Gioconda performances at 25 (Cleva at 65 (Milanov and Tebaldi); Serafin at 55, Toscanini at 29 surpass him).

I saw Crider’s Butterfly, and she didn’t make it for me. Arroyo, who was not a great Butterfly, sang it very well. Crider is several vocal grades below. The Met has had many wonderful Butterflys, but this is not among them, and to leave Stella, Tucci (with Bergonzi, Lorengar and Gorchakova (don’t laugh, when she first came I was overwhelmed by her Butterfly, and Gatti conducted slowly, but thrillingly). Better to re-run the excellent Soviero Butterfly– she has two broadcasts, the 1994 has been on Sirius, but the 1996 has not. Both are with Leech as is the Gorchakova. There are other forgettable Butterflys that follow Crider, but there are fine Butterflys, and I’ve listed five.
