This is from the first Met season for Rusalka and Benackova is a worthy heroine. For the broadcast a young Ben Heppner is the Prince replacing Neil Rosenshein. Zajick did the Jezibaba premiere but ceded the broadcast to Toczyska who is a very fine artist. This is quite a wonderful performance with Benackova, Heppner, and Koptchak especially strong. This premiere Met season of it, the ensemble is of high quality. This is a performance that belongs in MOoD. This is its only broadcast until Fleming’s 2009 run where three performances were on Sirius, and one of them was in the matinee series on the Met International network. Benackova was the first broadcast Rusalka at the Met, and this performance captures her very well. Heppner early in his Met career is on fine form as is the lesser known Koptchak as the Water Sprite. Martin is a bit tested as the Foreign Princess– a very difficult part, no one makes it sound easy. Still, a lovely opera in a fine performance, and this is well deserving being added to the Met Player repertory besides its visibility on Sirius.

This is close to the end of Schwarz’s Met career. Not quite. She is back for the 2016 season for Buryja in Jenufa after an absence of 14 years. She has an earlier Rheingold Fricka in 1993, and I saw her in the Chereau Ring in 1978 and she closes her Met career with a 2002 Klytemnestra with Schnaut. There is also an excellent Erda in Madrid in 2007. One also encounters Phillip Langridge’s fine Loge.

Mackerras is a notable Janacek conductor, and the whole is well performed, but I don’t feel the warmth I do from Jenufa or even Makropoulos . Still, a nice contrast to other repertory. Mackerras is a master of the Czech repertoire, but I really need the visual to work for me with Kat’a.

There are multiple Rheingolds with Morris and Levine on MOoD; this is from Morris penultimate season in the Ring at the Met. The 1961 Leinsdorf Nilsson Ring has been on Sirius, but only the Walkure and Gotterdammerung have made their way to MOoD. The 1951 and 1957 Rheingolds make it to MOoD as well, but no Siegfied pre-Levine is on MOoD except the 1937 Bodanzky Melchior.

LUISA MILLER
Mar 3 @ 9:00 PM – 11:55 PM

LUISA MILLER:Verdi
Santi; Esperian, Pavarotti, Nucci, Plishka, Koptchak, White
Original Air Date: 03/02/1991

SID.20100214
Luisa Miller has done well on the air, although not entering the broadcast repertory of the Met until 1968. The title role has been taken on the airwaves by Caballe, Maliponte (not yet on Sirius!), Scotto, Ricciarelli, and Millo prior to this broadcast; for the tenor role, Tucker, Domingo, Pavarotti (in 1982 with Ricciarelli) led the way. The 1982 performance is also conducted by Santi and features Nucci and Plishka as well. The 1982 performance is on MOoD and I am listening to Tu puniscimi right now. The question is whether Esperian is to be preferred. For my money what I want to hear is either Caballe or Millo or Maliponte who simply have more of a measure of the music than Ricciarelli who has the right equipment, but not sure if she has the right technique. Esperian is even less gifted singer. Either way, Santi’s conducting is too lax for my taste as it was in the house. Levine is a far better Luisa conductor. For my money Act 3 of Luisa Miller is among the greatest acts in the Verdi canon This is the second of Pavarotti’s two broadcast Rodolfos. His 1982 also with Santi ( NO) and Nucci has Ricciarelli in the title role. It’s her most congenial role for a singer who had a short prime but not a short career. The 1982 version with KR is available on MOoD. It’s a good role for Pavarotti, but better to hear the earlier version; one of my favorite early Verdi works, and the last act is as good as anything he ever wrote. — Better to hear Pavarotti with Ricciarelli nine years earlier, also with Nucci and Santi and that is on Met Player.

DON CARLO:Verdi
Levine; Sylvester, Millo, Chernov, Zajick, Ramey, Koptchak
Original Air Date: 03/14/1992

SID.20160211
Sylvester, Millo, Chernov, and Zajick all repeat their roles from the Levine Sony Classical studio recording and this broadcast has been added to MOoD relatively recently ; Ramey who is the recording’s Inquisitor moves up to Filippo for this Met series including this broadcast, with Koptchak taking over the GI. This is the first of Zajick’s three broadcast outings as Eboli, and she is one of the best. Chernov who never quite turned into the new Robert Merrill still had a beautifully burnished tone, and his voice is a more natural fit than say Keenlyside (at least at the Met). This is Millo’s final Elisabetta with the Met (her earlier broadcast is in 1986). This is Ramey’s first of two Filippo broadcasts — 2002 (also with Zajick) is under Gergiev. Sylvester is a first rate Don Carlo, and while I loved this past season’s conducting by Nezet-Seguin, this 1992 cast is a world above the most recent casting and one of the best balanced Don Carlo casts ever.
