In this 11th year, over ten nights performances from the Met’s Live in HD series will be shown starting with a screening of FUNNY FACE in a special co-presentation with Film at Lincoln Center. Screenings run from August 23 through September 2. There will be 3000 seats in the Plaza in front of the Opera House with an additional standing room area. Cancellations due to thunder/lighting or high wind will not be rescheduled.
MANON LESCAUT:Puccini
Levine; Scotto, Domingo, Elvira, Capecchi
Original Air Date: 03/29/1980
SID.19400102
This performance is also available on video in MOoD. As an audio only performance, it ranks behind the two Bjorling broadcasts (1949 with Kirsten and 1956 with Albanese– the latter one of the great Met broadcasts thanks to the additional force of Mitropoulos in the pit). Though Tebaldi and Tucker were both great exponents of these roles, their 1959 broadcast together still seems to elude the Sirius programmers. Great shame, especially for her, as it’s one of her great afternoons. This 1980 broadcast is well worth listening to, but recent reactions to Scotto’s 1967 Butterfly and her 1982 Lady Macbeth found her tone even harder than remembered. Her style is impeccable, but her 45 year old Manon is pretty hard-edged.

LA FORZA DEL DESTINO:Verdi
Levine; Price, Domingo, MacNeil, Talvela, Elias, Capecchi
Original Air Date: 03/12/1977
SID.19450104
This performance is available on Met Opera on Demand (MOoD). Likely because this is one of Domingo’s only two broadcasts as Alvaro (the other is with Sharon Sweet). Price is very solid in her upper middle, but her tone is not that of a dramatic, and that is what Leonora is; the additional coloring is exactly what Milanov and Tebaldi have. Domingo is one category too small and lacks the expansiveness of Tucker or Corelli, and for styling, that goes to Bergonzi. Luckily all three gentlemen broadcast Forza from the Met, with Bergonzi and Corelli both opposite Price. Talvela is not the right sound for Guardiano, which has often been in the steady hands of Siepi and Giaiotti. Levine is the champion Forza conductor with 57 performances; amazingly Fausto Cleva never did the work at the Met. The German wing (Bruno Walter, Fritz Stiedry, George Schick) had a tight rein on it in the 40s and 50s.

Puccini
Levine; Zylis-Gara, Ciannella, Elvira, Capecchi
Original Air Date: 03/21/1981

This is not the most common of Met Manon Lescaut casts, but Zylis-Gara has some lovely moments, and so does Ciannella even if he is much more tried by the vocal demands of the role. Elvira who left us too soon makes for a fine Lescaut. There are better Manon Lescauts in the broadcast archive that have not yet been rebroadcast, but Zylis-Gara and Ciannella are not without their interest.

IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA:Rossini
Davis; Workman, Battle, Blake, Capecchi, Montarsolo
Original Air Date: 03/13/1982

The Met Database shows this as previously rebroadcast on Sirius, but not recently. The plus is relatively early Battle performance, but she also has a 1988 telecast reissued on commercial DG DVD (still available per Amazon). The difference between William Workman and Leo Nucci on the DVD is considerable. I was surprised that this telecast is not in MOoD. In fact, the two videos there are the excellent DiDonato, Florez, Mattei performance rom the first season of Met LIve in HD, and the second last season’s Barbiere with Isabel Leonard, Brownlee, and Maltman. Surely this 1988 performance needs to be in MOoD.
