In this 11th year, over ten nights performances from the Met’s Live in HD series will be shown starting with a screening of FUNNY FACE in a special co-presentation with Film at Lincoln Center. Screenings run from August 23 through September 2. There will be 3000 seats in the Plaza in front of the Opera House with an additional standing room area. Cancellations due to thunder/lighting or high wind will not be rescheduled.

This Is Albanese’s final Violetta broadcast her 10th. She is also the Met champion Violetta at 87 (Moffo has 80, then the ranks start to disperse rapidly. This is not my first choice Violetta (I never saw her in the part) but she is part of a Violetta tradition that has vanished. Happy that Sirius is broadcasting it. A few further Albanese Traviata notes– although she is the Violetta for Robert Merrill’s debut in 1945 (with Tucker but never with a broadcast microphone. Tucker, whose Alfredos go from 1945-1972 does not appear on the broadcast microphones for it after 1954 when the trio is Albanese, Tucker, Warren. Albanese also has a broadcast VIoletta with Bastianini and Prandelli in 1955. Sadly for the #1 Violetta in performances is not represented in MOoD. This 1959 is ok, but I would love to hear either the 1954 or 1955 on Sirius first.

We also enjoy the two Donna’s..sung by Steber and Della Casa, Ezio Flagello’s Leporello (often overshadowed by Corena’s more broadly comic portrayal) and the sweet tenor of Cesare Valletti. Dr. Karl Böhm leads a to-the-Viennese-manner-born performance. RWW: This is a fine performance; my only cavil is I would have preferred a Siepi broadcast which is available (though not yet on Sirius) from 1957 with the original cast which includes Corena as Leporello. Still, this is one of Steber’s best parts in a treasurable performance and Della Casa is a major Elvira. Flagello is an excellent Leporello. And while I am mentioning lacunae. Bohm’s 1967 broadcast with Sutherland and Lorengar also with Siepi is still missing from the Sirius broadcast stable as well.

I never saw him live, but always loved his Rigoletto. Only Warren really impressed me.

Mitropoulos was originally scheduled for this production but because of health problems it moved on to Leinsdorf. It’s a loss, but Rysanek more than holds up her end. This performance is also on Met Player for regular listening. Only the second year broadcast from 1960 has not appeared on Sirius (Barioni for Bergonzi) and it also has the duet on the heath cut. Still it would be interesting to hear as the contemporary reviews found the performance even better integrated. This cast was recorded by RCA shortly after the premiere, and this broadcast is available on Met Player. Very solid casting from top to bottom. Bergonzi really is luxury casting singing one of the great Verdi tenor arias, Ah, la paterna mano. Highly recommended.
