Cancellations due to thunder/lighting or high wind will not be rescheduled.
LA BOHÈME:Puccini
Original Air Date: 01/20/1962
Rich; Amara, Morell, Hurley, Testi, Giaiotti
SID.19360104
Not much in this cast draws me except for Giaiotti’s only broadcast Colline. He was considered by many in the tier behind Siepi, Tozzi, and Hines. He was an anchor of the Met ensemble for almost 3 decades, and frequently encountered as Timur, Raimondo, and Ramfis. There are definitely more interesting Bohemes out there, and they are broadcast more frequently than this. Still not a plus in this week’s listings.

DON GIOVANNI:Mozart
Böhm; London, Steber, Flagello, Della Casa, Valletti, Hurley

SR: This broadcast is especially notable as it was George London’s only broadcast outing as the Don. His Don was very different from Siepi’s, but just as impressive a portrayal. We also enjoy the two Donna’s..sung by Steber and Della Casa, Ezio Flagello’s Leporello (often overshadowed by Corena’s more broadly comic portrayal) and the sweet tenor of Cesare Valletti. Dr. Karl Böhm leads a to-the-Viennese-manner-born performance. RWW: This is a fine performance; my only cavil is I would have preferred a Siepi broadcast which is available (though not yet on Sirius) from 1957 with the original cast which includes Corena as Leporello. Still, this is one of Steber’s best parts in a treasurable performance and Della Casa is a major Elvira. Flagello is an excellent Leporello. And while I am mentioning lacunae. Bohm’s 1967 broadcast with Sutherland and Lorengar also with Siepi is still missing from the Sirius broadcast stable as well.

ORFEO ED EURIDICE:Gluck
Monteux; Stevens, Güden, Hurley
Original Air Date: 04/09/1955
SID.19470422
Stevens has two runs at the Met in 1955 under Monteux and three seasons later with a broadcast now under Max Rudolf and with Amara the Euridice. For my money no one ever looked better as Orfeo, but the audio only record is not nearly as memorable. Monteux is a legendary conductor (world premieres of Rite of spring and Daphnis and Chloe in Paris), but not sure that Gluck finds him at his best. This Orfeo is from his penultimate Met season. Monteux who also recorded it with Stevens, is really part of history (he conducted the world premieres of Rite of spring and Daphnis and Chlore). Stevens is a much beloved Met figure, but I think there are better ways to experience Orfeo.

LA BOHÈME:Puccini
Schippers; Albanese, Hurley, Bergonzi, Sereni, Scott
Original Air Date: 02/15/1958

This classic performance has been issued on Sony Classical Historical Met CD series as well as MOoD. Albanese goes back more than two decades for her recorded Mimi with Gigli, the classic Toscanini set with Peerce, and this solid performance from Bergonzi. Sereni was the first choice Marcello most evenings, though there are a few appearances by Bastianini and Merrill, but after Scotti’s 146 Marcellos, Sereni is next with 76 and Frank Guarrera third at 71. MacNeil had four park concert Marcellos with the Met, but never in the house onstage. The August 2014 rebroadcast was part of the extensive memorial the Met and Sirius broadcast that week on the occasion of Bergonzi’s passing. A Met singer most beloved. Worth tracking down that 2014 citation for the whole week as many of his broadcasts are on MOoD.
