2019 Summer HD Festival

In this 11th year, over ten nights performances from the Met’s Live in HD series will be shown starting with a screening of FUNNY FACE in a special co-presentation with Film at Lincoln Center.   Screenings run from August 23 through September 2.  There will be 3000 seats in the Plaza in front of the Opera House with an additional standing room area. Cancellations due to thunder/lighting or high wind will not be rescheduled.

This performance was also issued in Sony’s Historical series on CD, but strikingly not in the Met Opera on Demand (MOoD) which features a performance from the season before with the same conductor, Figaro, Count, and Cherubino. Della Casa is swapped with Amara and Soderstrom (as Susanna) is swapped with Peters. Siepi is the chief attraction here. His Figaro is represented by 3 other Nozze performances, but strangely his Mephisto only has one streaming representation, but neither Bjorling (1950, 1959) nor a strong cast for his last turn at the microhones in 1969.

This performance is in English, which is a rarity on Sirius since almost no translations are ever heard. The standout performance for me is Jon Vickers as Laca. The giant disappointment was Varnay’s Kostelnicka. Kniplova (native Czech, but singing in German with Hamburg) in this pivotal role, but Varnay was a dud dramatically and vocally. Kubiak’s English is surprisingly adequate, and overall I enjoy listening to this performance.

This performance is Kabaivanska’s Met farewell. Well cast and well conducted, there are two broadcasts of Onegin in 1979 (but different seasons),both with Mazurok and Plishka the only repeats from one to another. This is slightly better. For those who have never encountered Mazurok, his voice is as velvety as Hvorostovsky, and an upper register that definitely has squillo. Wish the Met would transfer one of these Mazurok Onegins to MOoD. Glad that it at least gets a regular Sirius re-hearing. The highlights of this opera are very exciting indeed, and if there is filler along the way, the Met put out one of its most sumptuous productions. Domingo did the first year broadcast and appears on the Met Player video (also on DVD). MacNeil gives a quite over the top performance that could not be replicated– think of Rigoletto on steroids. It’s a small part but you will notice him.

RWW: This is the first of two Valente Ilia broadcasts, and she is excellent. Behrens’ Elettra is not to my taste. Both Vaness and Studer are much more to my liking. Levine does very fine work here and deserves credit for solidly putting this work in the Met repertory. Valente is under-represented on MOoD (only Nanetta in Falstaff) and still catches the ensemble in its first year of the new production.RWW: This is the first of two Valente Ilia broadcasts, and she is excellent. UN BALLO IN MASCHERA:Verdi

Original Air Date: 12/06/1975

Merrill who had a virtual lock on Renato for two decades (one broadcast to Milnes) is still in decent form for his final season. The rest of the cast is not ideal. I saw Elinor Ross several times in Philadelphia, and while it was not an especially beautiful voice she could be a notable Gioconda and Turandot, and her video Norma from Germany with Del Monaco is well up to the task. Amelia is another matter, but paired with Morrell, this is not the afternoon for glorious Verdi. Forrester has a very distinguished concert career, but she’s wrong for Ulrica at the Met. It’s too late for Peters as Oscar — she’s very good in 1955. This is Merrill’s final broadcast (he has three farewell Germonts with Moffo which constitute the final operatic appearance for both at the Met. My memory of this performance is not especially positive. Elinor Ross was a fine singer. I saw her a decade earlier in Philadelphia with an excellent Gioconda, Aida, and Turandot. She also has on Youtube a mostly complete Norma with Del Monaco from Germany. She is well up to the competition there. This is I think a bit late. For Merrlll’s Renato I strongly recommend 2 of his earlier Renatos from 1963 (with Nilsson and Tucker) and 1966 (with Price and Bergonzi). Lewis is not an inspiring conductor for me.

This performance does not catch Corelli at his best. This is his final season and he completes his Met broadcast career 2 weeks later with a Turandot (and Bjoner’s final met appearance). For a man with almost 400 Met performances, he is richly represented in the broadcast archives. Better to listen to the Trovatore or Turandot in 1961 (a month apart!!!) or the AIda or Tosca from 1962 (also a month apart) or many others. Blegen is OK, but would be better paired with a different Romeo. This performance is on MOoD as well, and Blegen is very good. This is towards the end of the Corelli era (his next to last broadcast) and a close examination of his work is not always satisfying. This is Corelli’s penultimate Met broadcast, with Turandot occurring three weeks later (also Bjoner’s farewell to the Met in that performance). Corelli is second only to de Rezke in Romeo totals at the Met with his 36 performances. When paired with Freni as they were for the production’s premiere in 1967, one does not worry quite so much about the mostly absent French style. Freni had Gedda as her partner for the first broadcast of this production, then Corelli comes back for the next with Pilou as his partner and Lombard in the pit. Corelli has a second broadcast with Boky that finds neither of them in best voice. Blegen is a fine Juliette with him on the third, but the weak link for me this time is the conductor, Henry Lewis, who is no better than the weaker members of the Met’s Asst. Conductor staff. You can hear for yourself on MOoD.
